Church in the middle of nowhere - Iceland, a Nordic island nation, is defined by its dramatic landscape with volcanoes, geysers, hot springs and lava fields. Massive glaciers are protected in Vatnajökull and Snæfellsjökull national parks. Most of the population lives in the capital, Reykjavik, and is home to the National and Saga museums, tracing Iceland’s Viking history.
In Iceland, my wife and I rented a car in Reykjavik and drove the whole country along the coastal lines. We would drive for miles and miles surrounded by beautiful nature and animals without encountering a single person. We lost count of the number of waterfalls, glaciers, horses and sheeps we saw along our drives. That is why it was so unexpected to see a place of worship in the middle of nowhere. In that moment, I felt nature itself as sacred, imbued with spiritual power, and worthy of reverence.
