Martial Eagle - closely guarding its snake lunch

The martial eagle is a large eagle native to sub-Saharan Africa. It is the only member of the genus Polemaetus. A species of the booted eagle subfamily, it has feathers over its tarsus. Like many raptors, these eagles are top predators – they hunt other animals for food but no animals hunt them on a regular basis. This majestic eagle normally inhabits open grasslands that are scattered with large trees. It can also be found in scrubby, more arid areas, as well as wooded savannas, or riparian forests.

Kruger National Park in South Africa gave my wife and me so many opportunities to see wildlife in their natural habitat. We almost missed spotting this martial-eagle in our drive. We noticed that this eagle was sitting on something but it was not clear to see using my Nikon 18-140mm lens. So had to pull out the big guns - Tamaron 150-600mm lens. Setting the lens at maximum focal length, I was able to see the eagle sitting on a snake and getting ready for lunch. So amazing!
